Are you an A-Player, B-Player or C-Player?
Gulp. This is a difficult question to ask yourself. Objectively speaking, are you a top performer (as in the top 10-20%) on your team? Certainly if you are reading this I’m sure it’s safe to say you are not a C-Player… the bottom 20%, the ones that miraculously year after year find a way to not get fired, sometimes affectionately known as the “paycheck robbers”. Or do you perhaps fall into the safe zone, the B-Player zone? B-Players fall in that middle zone where greatness doesn’t happen frequently but at least with good coaching and plenty of drive they can easily work their way into the A-team.
This article from FastCompany highlights an issue that too many leaders are spending too much time on their A-Players, instead of spending more time in developing grow the B & C level workers. Do you think this is a true problem? Is there such a thing as spending “too much time” with the rock stars of your team? If leaders think this is a true problem, aren’t there creative ways to pair up A-Players with B-Players to help elevate everyone’s level of performance?
